Robust Route Planning in Intermodal Urban Traffic
Passengers value reliable travel times but are often faced with delays in intermodal urban traffic. To improve their mobility experience, we propose a robust route planning tool that provides routes guaranteeing a certain probability of on-time arrival and satisfying additional constraints. The constraints can limit the number of transfers, time-dependent trip costs and other relevant resources. To find such routes, we extend the time-dependent reliable shortest path problem by adding constraints on time-dependent and stochastic edge weights. An exact solution method based on multi-objective A* search is proposed to solve this problem. By applying our algorithm to a showcase featuring an actual city, we hope to answer relevant questions for policy-makers and contribute to smarter mobility in the future
Bringing Analytics into Practice: Evidence from the Power Sector
Across industries, the increasing availability of sensor data has created business opportunities for the application of analytical information systems. We shed light on the analytics implementation in practice in the context of a case study in the power sector. Following a design science approach, we present a case study on the implementation of a decision support system (DSS) for grid planning at a large utility. Given the very large number of grids, process automation through analytics promises significant efficiency gains for labor-intensive planning tasks. We demonstrate how the DSS leads to process improvements regarding speed, accuracy, and flexibility. Apart from the benefits for the company, this work contributes to IS practice by deriving general lessons for IS executives facing analytics challenges
ENHANCING MUNICIPAL ANALYTICS CAPABILITIES TO ENABLE SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRANSPORTATION
Intermodal mobility, the IT-enabled, seamless transition between different modes of transportation to reach oneâs destination, is a promising approach towards reducing the environmental footprint of urban mobility. We introduce a prototype, a geospatial data analytics system, that allows decision-makers at the municipal level to better understand how different means of transportation interact and interfere with each other within their city. Through a demonstration case, we particularly focus on the relationship between public transportation and private sector carsharing services in the city of Berlin. We outline the methods employed by the prototype to investigate the spatial and temporal dimensions of carsharing usage and how they relate to public transport offers. Our results suggest that carsharing complements public transport in some ways â e.g. by linking parts of the city with an insufficient public transport connection but also low demand â while potentially cannibalizing customers from public transport in the city center due to the increased comfort. We conclude by discussing how stakeholders can transform these insights into actionable advice
3D Analytics: Opportunities and Guidelines for Information Systems Research
Progress in sensor technologies has made three-dimensional (3D)
representations of the physical world available at a large scale. Leveraging
such 3D representations with analytics has the potential to advance Information
Systems (IS) research in several areas. However, this novel data type has
rarely been incorporated. To address this shortcoming, this article first
presents two showcases of 3D analytics applications together with general
modeling guidelines for 3D analytics, in order to support IS researchers in
implementing research designs with 3D components. Second, the article presents
several promising opportunities for 3D analytics to advance behavioral and
design-oriented IS research in several contextual areas, such as healthcare IS,
human-computer interaction, mobile commerce, energy informatics and others.
Third, we investigate the nature of the benefits resulting from the application
of 3D analytics, resulting in a list of common tasks of research projects that
3D analytics can support, regardless of the contextual application area. Based
on the given showcases, modeling guidelines, research opportunities and
task-related benefits, we encourage IS researchers to start their journey into
this largely unexplored third spatial dimension

MANAGEMENT\u27S IT COMPETENCE IN TURBULENT MARKET ENVIRONMENTS
We analyze the effect of IT competence on management\u27s support for novel technology when facing environmentally-induced pressures. We argue that competent managers are less prone to the effects of mimicry in turbulent environments. We aim to evaluate our hypotheses with a study on blockchain technology in the energy sector, which has recently been particularly affected by rapid changes and uncertainty. Apart from the theoretical contribution, this project has several potential implications for practice. For instance, organizations may be able to increase their resilience in turbulent environments by investing in management\u27s IT competence
How a Traditional Company Seeded New Analytics Capabilities
Developing state-of-the art data analytics capabilities is a challenge for traditional companies with long-established processes and legacy systems. We describe how one such company (a Swiss electricity utility) conducted a seed project - a bottom-up initiative to develop an analytics ecosystem of business, organizational and technological capabilities. This project was an effective first step in growing the company\u27s analytics capabilities. Based on this case, we provide four key lessons that can be used by other traditional companies seeking to develop new digital capabilities.Click here for podcast summary (mp3) Click here for free 2-page executive summary (pdf)Click here for free presentation slides (pdf
